Question 1

What is data annotation?

Accepted Answer

Data annotation is the work of labelling, rating or correcting data so that it can be used to train or evaluate AI models. For language models this often means comparing responses, checking facts and writing explanations of what is right or wrong.

Question 2

What does coding-focused AI evaluation involve?

Accepted Answer

Typical tasks include judging whether AI-generated code is correct, tracing it against test cases, comparing two solutions, spotting where a response ignored an instruction and explaining your judgement in clear written English. The exact tasks depend on the platform and project.

Question 3

Do I need to be a professional software engineer?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Requirements are set by each platform and often by each project. Some coding roles ask for professional or serious open-source experience; others are open to a wider range of backgrounds. Check each provider's current listing.

Question 4

Can beginners apply?

Accepted Answer

Anyone can apply to the platforms directly, but coding projects generally expect you to read and judge code confidently. If you are early in your journey, the free practice lab is a low-risk way to see where you stand.

Question 5

Do I need a computer science degree?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. For example, DataAnnotation's Software Engineer listing states that no degree is required (checked 12 October 2026). Other platforms set requirements per listing. We never treat a degree as mandatory unless a specific opportunity says so.

Question 6

Is the work remote?

Accepted Answer

The platforms we cover describe their work as remote. Some projects have location-specific eligibility, so check the listing for your country.

Question 7

How flexible is the schedule?

Accepted Answer

Platforms generally describe the work as flexible and project-based. Some state there are no minimum hours. Projects can have deadlines, time tracking or required hours, so read each project's terms.

Question 8

How much can people earn?

Accepted Answer

It varies widely. Platforms publish rate ranges for some roles, but actual earnings depend on the platform, the project, your location, your performance and how much work is available. We do not publish earnings promises, and our calculator is a hypothetical illustration only.

Question 9

Is work guaranteed?

Accepted Answer

No. Being accepted by a platform does not guarantee a steady supply of projects. Platforms state that availability depends on demand for your skills and your performance.

Question 10

How do platform assessments work?

Accepted Answer

Each platform runs its own process. Depending on the platform this can include a starter assessment, a domain-specific test, an AI interview and identity verification. Some assessments can only be taken once, so read the instructions carefully. We do not have, and never provide, confidential assessment content.

Question 11

What are the differences between DataAnnotation, Alignerr and Mercor?

Accepted Answer

In short: DataAnnotation has dedicated coding roles and a single starter assessment per track; Alignerr (powered by Labelbox) works through individual job listings, sometimes with an AI interview; Mercor matches experts to specific contracts and often uses an AI interview and assessments. The full comparison has sources and dates.

Question 12

Does SoftwareSideHustles.com guarantee acceptance?

Accepted Answer

No. We are an independent guide. Each platform decides who it accepts and what work it offers. Nothing on this site — including our questionnaire, practice labs or tutoring — guarantees acceptance or income.

Question 13

Is the premium content required to apply?

Accepted Answer

No. You can apply to any platform directly, for free, without buying anything from us. Premium practice is optional educational material and is not endorsed or required by any platform.

Question 14

What do the practice labs include?

Accepted Answer

Four labs: Code Comparison (free), Response Evaluation, Preference Labelling and Behavioural Evaluation (premium). Each exercise is original, records your answer and then shows a full explanation and rubric.

Question 15

Can I cancel or get a refund for my purchase?

Accepted Answer

Yes, within the terms of our Refund Policy and your statutory rights. In summary, digital content purchases can be refunded within 14 days if you have not yet used premium exercises, and tutoring bookings can be cancelled for a refund up to 24 hours before the session. See the policy for the full details.

Question 16

What happens during a tutoring session?

Accepted Answer

A one-to-one video session focused on the topics you choose: programming fundamentals, reading and debugging code, comparing solutions, test-case analysis or structuring a written justification. Sessions are coaching only and never involve confidential assessment answers.

Question 17

Does SoftwareSideHustles.com receive referral commissions?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes. Some links to platforms may be referral links, and we may receive compensation if you are accepted or hired through them. Every referral link is labelled, and we also show ordinary application links. Referral arrangements never change how a platform assesses you.
