DataAnnotation

Remote contract work evaluating and improving AI output, including dedicated coding roles.

What the work involves

DataAnnotation describes its work as tasks that help AI perform better: reviewing responses, checking accuracy, refining prompts and rating outputs. Its Software Engineer listing is specific to coding:

  • working with frontier models on real tasks;
  • analysing the AI's work against production standards;
  • red-teaming models to expose unsafe code, faked test passes and confidently wrong solutions.

The job board also lists Frontend, Backend, DevOps and Full Stack engineering roles.

Who it is aimed at

For coding roles, the listing asks for:

  • professional or serious open-source experience shipping production code;
  • comfort in at least one major stack — it states most tasks use Python, C++, Rust, Go or JavaScript;
  • clear written English, because "your explanations are the training signal".

The listing states that no degree is required for this role. The general FAQ describes a baseline of a bachelor's degree or equivalent real-world experience for generalist work, and requires all workers to have reliable internet access and be fluent in English.

How applying works

According to the FAQ, you choose a qualification track at sign-up by selecting a Starter Assessment. The FAQ states:

  • you can only take the Starter Assessment once;
  • most assessments take about an hour, and specialised ones may take one to two hours.

Because there is only one attempt, it is worth reading the instructions carefully and making sure you have uninterrupted time before you start.

Pay and schedule

The job board lists coding roles at "up to $40–$150+/hr depending on task difficulty and specialization" (as published when we checked on 12 October 2026). These are the provider's own published figures, not a promise: the FAQ states that work availability depends on demand for your skills and your past performance. The FAQ also states that payments are sent via PayPal and that there are no minimum hours.

Location

The public FAQ does not list eligible countries. If location matters for you, confirm with DataAnnotation before investing time in the assessment.
